Banking

Which banks you should consider

So, you just moved to Germany and need a bank.
But there are so many, so which one should you choose?
I have put together a list of a few banks that a few students have recommended me:

Revolut

  • Multi-currency accounts
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Free of charge
  • Free Visa/Mastercard Debit card
  • Request online within a few minutes (without annoying paperwork)
  • No video or post ident (picture of ID is enough)
  • Apple and Google pay
  • Virtual debit cards
  • No choice of getting Visa or Mastercard
  • [!] Is not an bank on its own, an existing bank account is required

N26

  • Free of charge
  • Wide ATM support
  • Limited credit/loan options
  • Fees on foreign transfers
  • Free Mastercard Debit card
  • User friendly app
  • Virtual debit cards

Comdirect

I personally use Comdirect and I am very happy with it.
The app is nice to use, its an online bank (so you can apply for it online) and it belongs to Commerzbank.

Some advantages are:

  • Online bank (you can sign up online)
  • Owned by Commerzbank, you can use the ATMs of all their partner banks for free
  • The app is very clean and nice to use
  • Instand transaction updates on the app
  • Girocard and Visa Debitcard
  • Three free transfers per month
  • You cannot get in depth
  • free to use
  • Google and Apple Pay

Some disadvantages are:

  • You need to verify by postident
  • Unlike Revolut, there are foreign transaction fees

Deutsche Bank

  • a service point here in Frankfurt (Oder), they also speak english
  • user friendly app
  • one of the most famous and established banks in Germany (you can use ATMs of partner banks)
  • good online banking
  • dedicated accounts for young people and students
  • investment and financial planning services
  • stability
  • foreign transaction fees
  • account fees for people older than 30 (Standart account) (if you earn less than 700€ / m)
  • Young account provides free Mastercard
  • complex fee system

Tho this is just a very simple list, trying to show the most general advantages.
It is supposed to be a starting point of a few banks that you can consider.
You should do your own research on which bank fits the best for you.
Tho, most students suggest Deutsche Bank as the best choice for new students in Germany.
I’d recommend you to go to a service point or call the bank to ask a few questions, so you can make sure that you get the right bank.

Please note that in order to open a bank account, you should bring the following documents:
Visa, Residence Permit, ID, Passport
